India celebrated its first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 after Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu delivered another historic performance in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event in Glasgow. The 31-year-old weightlifter lifted a Games record total of 190kg, comprising 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean & jerk, to comfortably finish on top of the podium.

Mirabai dominated the competition from the very beginning. She successfully lifted 85kg in the snatch to lead the field before sealing the gold with a brilliant 105kg clean & jerk. Her combined total of 190kg was enough to break the Commonwealth Games record and secure India’s opening gold medal of the tournament.

The victory was historic for multiple reasons. Mirabai became the first Indian weightlifter to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals, having previously won gold at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022. She had also claimed a silver medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, making her one of India’s most decorated athletes at the event.

Following her triumph, Mirabai revealed the sacrifices behind the medal-winning performance. To remain within the 48kg weight category, she reportedly avoided food and water for nearly three days before the competition. Despite the physical challenge, she produced one of the finest performances of her career, once again proving why she is among the world’s elite weightlifters.

Mirabai’s gold also boosted India’s overall medal tally at the Commonwealth Games. At the end of the day’s events, India had won 4 medals—1 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze—with athletes still competing in boxing, athletics, swimming, and other disciplines. The performance moved India higher in the medal standings and provided momentum for the remaining days of the competition.

With yet another record-breaking display, Mirabai Chanu has reaffirmed her status as one of India’s greatest sporting icons. Her consistency on the international stage continues to inspire young athletes and has once again given Indian fans a proud moment to celebrate.
