The conclusion of Stranger Things brought about a sudden surge of requests from the most loyal fans of the series for Netflix to broadcast the theatrical performance Stranger Things: The First Shadow. The talked-about issue got intensified when the last episodes of this highly-rated sci-fi series were made available on Netflix on December 31, 2025.
The last season was so thick with allusions to the storyline that was being dealt-with in the play that, if people had not been to the showing, they might have been quite baffled and eager to know more.
The First Shadow is a prequel stage production penned by Kate Trefry, who has also authored the story along with the Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, and Jack Thorne. After its premiere at the Phoenix Theatre on London’s West End in December 2023, the play went on to Broadway at the Marquis Theatre in New York City in April 2025.
The production looks into the early days of the character Henry Creel, which will later turn out to be the evil villain Vecna in the television series. It unfolds how he acquired his powers, and eventually getting involved in Dr. Brenner’s experiments.
The recent finale episodes of Stranger Things included moments that were clearer to audiences who had seen The First Shadow live. Some plot developments and character background details referenced events and relationships shown on stage. That has left a portion of the fan base feeling that important context is missing from the TV show itself unless someone has access to attend a live performance.
Posts on social media reflect mixed reactions. Many fans voiced frustration that the play’s content is not widely accessible outside live theater. Some argued that core elements of the story should have been included in the main TV series or released as a filmed special.
Others are simply eager to stream the play on Netflix so they can better understand the final season’s story beats without having to see the stage production in person.
At the same time, Netflix already offers a behind-the-scenes documentary titled Behind the Curtain: Stranger Things: The First Shadow. This documentary explores how the play was created and gives viewers some insight into its production. While it does not replace the full stage experience, it has given some fans a glimpse into the play’s world.
One reason for the streaming access push is that the play “Stranger Things” loved by the majority of global viewers might never get a live performance due to location and price factors. Theater performances occur at particular places, London and New York City, making it difficult for lots of fans to be there.
This situation has encouraged the request to Netflix more strongly to either record or release the play so that the story can reach the worldwide audience that was the same as its series.
Those who are in favor of Netflix showing The First Shadow argue that it would aid in closing some narrative gaps and make the Stranger Things world more belonging for those viewers who did not attend the play, or who simply prefer watching it on Netflix.
Besides this issue, the debate comes up with the broader question of how supplementary stories should be shared through different media when they are deeply connected to the plotlines of the TV shows.
The play is still live on stage though, and Netflix has not yet made any official announcements concerning streaming the entire production. The fans are still vocalizing and requesting for accessibility to be made easier, especially now that the interest in Stranger Things is still very high after its finale and the tattle about related spin-off contents.
